Insurance or Self-Pay for Therapy
Insurance

Please note I am a preferred provider for Premera Blue Cross, Regence and First Choice insurance plans, so other insurance plans may not be covered in full. Services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance or employee benefits plan. Please check your coverage. I am able to bill as an out- of-network provider with most insurance companies, but you will be responsible for the difference between my fee and what your insurance does not cover. Unless we get preapproval from your insurance company, you will be expected to pay for each session at the time of the appointment. Then we can try and submit a claim for reimbursement; however, I cannot guarantee that you will be reimbursed.
Please check your coverage carefully by asking the following questions:

  • What is my deductible and has it been met?
  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session for an out-of-network provider?
  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?

Self-Pay

I provide the following information to inform you how health insurance works for mental health, and why you may want to consider self-pay for your services. There are many reasons why someone may choose to self-pay. Among these are:

  • No Mandatory Diagnosis: Insurance companies require diagnoses to pay for treatment, meaning I have to diagnose you with a mental disorder and share this with the insurance company. If you are in great distress and meet the criteria, then insurance is a great option. You then have to decide whether you want this to be part of your insurance record (see Privacy, below). However, if you seek therapy for something that does not meet their criteria, you may be denied coverage. Self-pay means I do not have to diagnose you, and we can work collaboratively on whatever issues you are navigating.
  • Privacy: Insurance companies can request information about you. This includes a diagnosis, treatment plan and session notes. With self-pay, your information is kept strictly confidential, unless you sign a release or I have to break confidentiality in case of self-harm or danger to others (this is explained in the forms you sign with all licensed therapists). No insurance company is aware of our sessions or the content of the sessions.
  • Choice of Therapist and Treatment: Using your insurance, you are encouraged to use only therapists who are contracted with the insurance company. Those that you are likely to contact may not have appointments available. Those that have the time may not be geographically near you or may not appeal to you in their treatment options. Self-pay allows you to choose your therapist and work together to develop treatment options that are best for you.

If you are interested in self-pay, and cannot afford my rates, we can discuss options such as reduced rates and every-other-week appointments to give you access to the care you want.
